Do you have what it takes to become an “extreme” champion?

The Better Opportunities for Single Soldiers program at Fort Irwin will launch its first Extreme Velocity Challenge next week starting Monday.  The challenge consists of participation in three consecutive BOSS-sponsored trips to locations around southern and central California: Bungee America in Los Angeles on Monday, white water rafting in Three Rivers, Calif. on Tuesday, and Pole Position Kart Racing in Corona, Calif. on Wednesday.

The challenge is being held in conjunction with Battle Buddies Against Drunk Driving, which encourages Soldiers to make smart decisions, including not driving under the influence of alcohol.  The BBADD program operates the BBADD van at Fort Irwin, which provides Soldiers with free rides around Fort Irwin.

The Extreme Velocity Challenge aims to provide Soldiers with fun, positive alternatives to drinking and other potentially destructive decisions during their free time, said Spc. Kendrick Barnett, BOSS vice-president.  Representatives from the Army Substance Abuse Program will attend the challenges along with Soldiers and will help them engage in discussions about the consequences of their choices.

“It’s about giving them positive experiences to get their minds on positive things,” Barnett said.  “We’re showing them what’s available out there and letting them know there’s more out there than just drugs.”

On the way to the events, Soldiers will have the chance to compete for the title of Extreme Velocity champion by answering trivia questions and participating in other challenges.  The winner will be awarded a trophy.

Barnett said the BOSS program is already considering other options for future Extreme Velocity trips, and is looking into obtaining sponsorship to help offset some of the costs.
