Tiefort View Intermediate School students run at the school's Fun Run 2012 on April 11.

Tiefort View Intermediate School held the TVIS Fun Run 2012 at the school’s campus April 11.  Organized by Jennifer Kimbrough, treasurer of the TVIS Parent Teacher Organization, and supported by Soldiers from Operations Group, the event was planned to serve several purposes:  to promote physical fitness, to raise funds for PTO programs, and to instill an appreciation by the students for setting and meeting goals.

The school’s entire student body of third-, fourth- and fifth-graders participated in running or walking a circular course for 30 minutes.  Each student’s progress was marked by volunteers.  The boy and girl in each grade who completed the most laps were awarded a trophy.

Students at Tiefort View Intermediate School raise funds for the Parent Teacher Organization while engaging in physical fitness at the school’s Fun Run 2012 on April 11.

Students were given the opportunity to collect pledges in advance for the number of laps completed in the 30-minute time period.  Funds collected from the pledges will support school assemblies, student behavioral and academic incentive rewards, the purchasing of school equipment, and other programs and functions.

“We scheduled this run a week before the California state testing begins for a reason,” said Jennifer Kimbrough.  “We want the students to have an awareness of the importance of setting and meeting goals, both physically and academically.  For this undertaking, the PTO truly appreciates the assistance from Operations Group Soldiers.  We could not have done this event without their help.”

Operations Group Soldiers were on hand to support the TVIS students by providing trophies and coins, handing out drinking water, marking the students completed laps, and by cheering them on.

“Operations Group has long had a partnership with Tiefort View Intermediate School,” said Col. Derrick Farmer, Operations Group deputy commander.  “We’re happy to help the school with this event.   As we strive for Fort Irwin to continue to be a community of choice, we see the importance of encouraging our community’s kids and their efforts.”

The following students were awarded a trophy for having completed the most laps in their grade for the boys and girls categories respectively:

  • 3rd grade:  Terrance Smothers and Chad Warmoth (tied), Renee Fowler
  • 4th grade:  Mac DiRocco and Jeanie Chevallier
  • 5th grade:  James Kimbrough and Kimberly Liker

The slogan of the TVIS Fun Run 2012 was “Going the Distance!  Runners Today!  Leaders Tomorrow!”  The enthusiasm displayed by the students would suggest that the Fort Irwin community is rich with youths who are ready to set and reach their future goals.
