Members of the Dragon Live Fire training team took to the 20- and 60-foot rappel towers at Fort Irwin April 25 to reacquaint some Soldiers and introduce new Soldiers to stepping backwards into nothing — also known as rappelling. Rappelling, a method of quickly descending steep inclines, is a key skill for mountaineering. Stepping backwards into space 60 feet off the ground challenges Soldiers to trust their equipment and training over instinct and to conquer any lingering fear of height. All participants made it down the walls, establishing confidence and instilling a hunger for future opportunities at the rappel range or a more advanced event using the surrounding mountains.
