A quarterly town hall meeting was held May 2 at Sandy Basin Community Center. Following are highlights of issues addressed:
- Col. Pinkerton, Fort Irwin Garrison commander, gave an overview of the status of issues addressed at February’s town hall meeting. Twenty-five construction projects have been completed and 18 are currently under construction, including, the community pavilion, blue track renovation, zero-depth spray park, aerobics center, warrior zone and Reggie’s bar, all of which are slated for completion by October.
- Col. Pinkerton asked community members and parents to make sure their children are engaging in safe activities as summer approaches. The Fort Irwin Twin Theater will begin showing matinee movies each Tuesday starting June 1.
- Georg Main, The Exchange general manager, provided an update on Exchange projects. The optical shop in The Exchange is set to reopen July 1. A mini storage facility is set to open in June. The Exchange is also planning to install new flooring in the mall area.
- Cynthia Hernandez, general manager of the Fort Irwin commissary, provided an update on DeCa activities, including this month’s seafood roadshow.
- A resident asked why speed bumps could not have been installed in the Fort Irwin Town Center instead of permanently closing it to vehicle traffic. Col. Pinkerton clarified that legally we cannot install speed bumps on roads.
- A resident asked for clarification about the utilities billing system in Fort Irwin’s housing. Col. Pinkerton reiterated that the billing system is designed to encourage residents to be good stewards and that one-third of residents will receive a bill, one-third will receive a refund, and one-third will receive nothing. For further clarification or questions about utilities billing, contact Pinnacle at 1-888-828-4144.
- A resident asked which projects at Fort Irwin were funded with funds raised by recycling programs. Some of these projects include the zero-depth water spray park currently under construction, energy-saving light switches in some older buildings, and the upcoming bar remodeling in Reggie’s and energy efficient lights in the RUFMA.
