Story and photos by Sgt. Anthony J. Lecours

Troopers from the 11th Armored Cavalry Regiment set up a security perimeter as part of a training range on Fort Irwin on May 2.

Fifteen four-man crews from across the U.S. Army competed this month for a chance to be called the Army’s best when it comes to tanking. The five-day Sullivan Cup event, held May 7-11 at Fort Benning, Ga., consisted of a physical fitness test, tank maintenance challenge, gunnery skills competition, vehicle identification, virtual simulations and concluded with two days of live-fire exercises.

Fort Irwin’s 11th Armored Cavalry Regiment team conducted multiple ranges both in tank shooting individual weapons in preparation for the event. The troopers not only practiced skills and scenarios based around the tank, but also basic Soldier skills to keep them sharp for the competition. The team practiced combat lifesaving techniques by using a human mannequin and a litter to practice how to treat and move a casualty under fire.

The competition included teams from the 81st Washington National Guard, the 194th Armor and the 316th Cavalry Brigades from Fort Benning, GA., the 1st Armored Division from Fort Bliss, Texas, 1st Cavalry Division from Fort Hood, Texas, the 2nd Infantry Division from Korea, the 3rd Infantry Division at Fort Stewart and Fort Benning and the 4th Infantry Division from Fort Carson, Colo.

The event is named after Gen. Gordon R. Sullivan, whose career spanned more than 30 years, serving as the Army’s 32nd chief of staff, deputy commander of the U.S. Armor School at Fort Knox, Ky., He’s now president of the Association of the United States Army.

The 11 ACR placed eighth overall.

“It is my vision that this competition grow in the upcoming years to include inter-service and international competition,” said Brig. Gen. Thomas S. James, Armor School Commandant and the 46th Chief Armorer.  “This is a great way to showcase the professionalism and lethality of the United States Armor Force.”
