Fort Irwin Community Calendar June 7, 2012

TODAY

The Fort Irwin shopping tour shuttle runs Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday between Fort Irwin and the Home Depot, Walmart and Tanger Outlets in Barstow.  Anyone will valid ID to access Fort Irwin can take advantage of this service.  Cost is $2.75 for a one-way ride.  Children 5 and under are free.  For more information, call 380-3598 or 380-4784. 

 

TOMORROW

Storytime at the Library takes place Fridays at 10 a.m.  Toddlers, preschoolers, and their parents are welcome to come sing songs, listen to stories and make a craft.  For more information, call 380-3462.

 

SATURDAY

Strike Zone Bowling Center offers Cosmic Bowling every Saturday from 8 p.m. to midnight.  Come listen to the latest hits while bowling with glow-in-the-dark pins.  Cost is $20 per person for unlimited bowling.  For more information, call 380-4249.

 

MONDAY

Spouses’ night at the Auto Craft shop will be held from 5-6 p.m.  Come take this free class to learn about basic car mechanics, such as tire pressure, oil changes, and more.  For more information, call 380-3531.

Armed Forces Voting Week is June 11-15.  Soldiers and family members can register to vote, request absentee ballots and update their addresses at Mary Walker Clinic during this time. Employer meet-and-greet

 

TUESDAY

AUSA will hold a monthly meeting for all members at 8 a.m. in the Quality Inn on East Main Street in Barstow. Quality Inn will sponsor breakfast for all attendees.  For more information call the chapter president, Calvin Phillips, at 760-985-8905.

The Summer Reading Program will have events at the Fort Irwin Library each Tuesday and Wednesday from 11 a.m. to noon this summer.  Come enjoy crafts, activities, and reading.  The program is for children 10 and under.  For more information, call 380-3462.

 

WEDNESDAY

There will be a meeting of the Exceptional Family Member Program support group from 9-10 a.m. at The Forum, Bldg. 1200.  Come meet with others similar situations and get information about resources in the community.  For more information, call 380-3698.

 

GARAGE SALES

Saturday:  4627 Tunisia St.  Items:  Assorted – PCS move – Note:  proceeds will go towards offsetting cost of adoption.

UPCOMING

The Missoula Children’s Theater will visit Fort Irwin for a theater workshop June 18-23.  Children registered with CYSS can audition for a production of Red Riding Hood.  Casting call will be at 10 a.m. June 18, with rehearsals June 19-22 from 10 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., although times may vary depending on role cast.  The performance will take place June 23 at 3 p.m. and 5:30 p.m. at Ingalls Recreation Center.  Children in grades 1-12 are eligible to participate.  For more information, call 380-7751.

 

June 18 is the last day to submit your application for the Hired! apprenticeship program session beginning June 24.  The Hired! program gives 15-18 year olds work experience in offices and agencies around Fort Irwin.  Each student is eligible for a $500 cash award upon completion of their first session with Hired!  For more information or to register, call Meagan Silva at 380-8412 or visit Bldg. 1313.

 

Looking for something to do this summer?  Have some fun by getting involved and volunteer as a Summer Event Assistant. Here are just some of the upcoming events:

  • June 23 Cali Swag II Car Show (registration booth, prize booth, basketball tournament assistant, video game tournament assistant, info booths)
  • July 4 Red, White, Boom Bash (various game and info booths)
  • July 30 NTC Fort Irwin Resource Expo (setup, admin assistant, greeter)
  • August 14-15 Soldier Show (setup, info booths)
  • August24-25 Sesame Street (setup, staff area, greeter)

A kindergarten preparation course will be offered July 24, 26, 31, and Aug. 2 from 9:30-11 a.m. at Happy Hearts Child Development Center, Bldg. 1317.  Children will go over language and literacy, math, social skills, and fine motor skills.  Cost is $40.  For more information, call 380-7751 or 380-2257.

 

ONGOING

Think you’ve got the best secret sauce around?  Enter your barbecue sauce in the Fort Irwin Arts and Crafts Center’s barbecue sauce contest and find out!  The contest runs through June 30.  Winner will receive a framed certificate. Call 380-3831 or stop by the arts and crafts center at Bldg. 976 for more information.

Veterans History Project

Local veterans interested in sharing their story are invited to participate in the Veterans History Project, a national initiative sponsored by the Red Cross.  The program was established by Congress in 2000 to preserve the stories of veterans and civilians supporting U.S. war efforts as far back as World War I.  Interested veterans will be interviewed by Red Cross volunteers.  Each interview will be sent to the Library of Congress and the veteran will be given a DVD copy of the interview and a dedicated website at www.loc.gov/vets.  For more information, call Bill Havican at 380-6140 or 380-3697 or email havicanw@redcross.org.
