The Military Child Care Act of 1989 was passed by both the House and Senate in November 1989. The goal of the act was to improve the availability, management, quality, and safety of child care provided on military installations.
Per this mandate, the Military Child Act of 1989 requires an annual unannounced program inspection of Army Child, Youth & School Services programs. This inspection is to ensure programs are in compliance with Department of Defense and Army regulatory requirements. Fort Irwin’s Child, Youth, and School Services programs concluded its weeklong unannounced inspection May 4.
Inspection teams are comprised of Army subject matter experts that not only observe programming, but also review the health and safety procedures of programs and facilities. The team also takes the time to speak with staff members and parents.
We are proud to report that overall Fort Irwin’s CYSS did very well on the inspection. As with most inspections, there were some findings – most of which are simple corrections such as correcting paperwork where a parent forgot to check a box on a liability waiver. Others will require a bit more work; such as having, an exhaust fan repaired. All findings require corrective actions and are monitored until completed.
While performing the inspection here at Fort Irwin, the team noted several positive behaviors by CYSS staff and included them in their evaluation out-brief. Examples of noted positive behavior include commitment to customer service, commitment to our military families, positive change, visible teamwork, and staff dedication.
