RSS volunteers to help Fort Irwin Middle School Field Day

Sgt. Charles Borscani, a trooper from Maintenance Troop, Regimental Support Squadron, 11th Armored Cavalry Regiment, volunteered to judge the kids soccer shootout at a field day on Fort Irwin, Calif., May 23. He offered advice to the students, coaching them on how best to complete their station.

Troopers from Maintenance Troop, Regimental Support Squadron,11th Armored Cavalry Regiment volunteered to help out Fort Irwin Middle School with a field day at May 23.

“RSS is the official sponsor of the school,” said Yvonne Coombes, the event coordinator. “But it’s a lot more than a name on a page with these troopers — you just call and they are there.”

The events pitted homerooms against each other by having them compete in the standing jump, shuttle sprint, soccer shootout, and a kickball tournament.  Points were tallied for each event, giving the winning homeroom bragging rights.

Maintenance Troop provided volunteers to help run each station, keeping track of the names, scores and homerooms. They offered advice to the students, coaching them on how best to complete their station.

“I really enjoyed the chance to be there for kids,” said Sgt. Charles L. Borscani, a volunteer from Maintenance Troop. “I was really surprised at both the skill and ambitions of the students at my station; some wanted to play soccer professionally.”

The field day was originally slated to be a dance, but the students opted for a day outside instead.

“It’s nice to see kids out there giving it there all with the events,” said Spc. Tiffaney Cardoso, a volunteer from Maintenance Troop. “One of the kids at my station finished the shuttle run in 11 seconds. I’m not sure I could do that.”

At the end of the day, a barbecue feast of grilled hamburgers and hotdogs was provided by the Maintenance Troop volunteers.

“It’s great to be out helping the community,” Spc. Mario Hernandez, a volunteer from Maintenance Troop. “But, the real winners here are the kids.”
