“Who knew?” Colonel Kurt Pinkerton, Garrison Commander, on his way to scoring 503 points during three games of bowling at Strike Zone, June 29.

If you’ll be hanging out on Fort Irwin during the opportunity leave period, which runs through July 15, why not try your hand at a friendly, bowling contest? The Strike Zone is holding “Bowl Over the GC,” which is a competition that pits your three-game score against Col. Kurt Pinkerton’s score.

Zha Zha West, recreational assistant at the Strike Zone, was busy with customers the same afternoon the first “Bowl Over the GC” contest was held. Strike Zone also offers Cosmic Bowling every Saturday from 8 p.m. to midnight; cost is $20 per person for unlimited bowling. Listen to the latest hits while bowling over glow-in-the-dark pins.

Last Friday, Pinkerton, who is the Garrison Commander, put on his bowling shoes, performed (what looked like) a few warm-up stretches and proceeded to knock down enough pins in three games for 503 points. Command Sgt. Maj. Dale Perez, the soon-to-be Garrison Command Sergeant Major, and his son Joe, shared the lanes with Pinkerton at the post bowling alley, which was busy that afternoon. Perez scored 396, while junior achieved 250 points.

Right next to Pinkerton and crew, three other bowlers came close to the top score. First Lt. Samuel Sistare, the logistics officer with Headquarters and Headquarters Company at 1916th Support Battalion under 916th Support Brigade, bowled a 457. Jimmy Perez, a supply and services supervisor at 916th Support Brigade, got 473. Corporal Alex Vanderham, an evacuation NCO with 4-9 Infantry under 4-2 Stryker Brigade Combat Team, was the closest with 490 total points.

Pinkerton bowls again tomorrow at 5 p.m. and then July 13 at the same time. You don’t have to bowl the same night that Pinkerton plays. You have all week to play three games, and as many times as you need, to top his latest Friday night total; Strike Zone will tally your scores and if you beat the current Pinkerton score, you win.

Any bowler that can beat his three-game series will win three free games of bowling and a free shoe rental. Weekly winners will receive $10 in “MWR Bucks,” and the overall series winner will get $25 “MWR Bucks.” The overall top series winner for all three sessions will get his or her name put on a plaque that reads, “I Bowled Over the GC,” which will be hung at Strike Zone for all to see.

Kyra Otte, 5, and Devynne Linnell, 8, went to Strike Zone with their family from Paso Robles, Calif., June 29. They were paying a visit to Pfc. Jonathon Moss, a mechanic at Headquarters and Headquarters Troop with 2nd Squadron of the 11th Armored Cavalry Regiment.

Corporal Alex Vanderham, an evacuation NCO with 4-9 Infantry under 4-2 Stryker Brigade Combat Team, scored 490 points during three-games at Strike Zone, June 29.

Caleb Symonds, 11, focuses on his goal – to knock ‘em all down during a bowling game at Strike Zone, June 29.

Joe Perez rolls the ball during a three-game contest at Strike Zone, June 29. Soon-to-be Garrison Command Sergeant Major, Command Sgt. Maj. Dale Perez, waits for his turn to bowl during the “Bowl Over the GC.”

“Who is this guy?” The soon-to-be Garrison Command Sergeant Major, Command Sgt. Maj. Dale Perez, shows off his form during a three-game battle at Strike Zone, June 29.

Jemell Reeder, 10, and Kendall Lee, 9, hang out by the stuffed-animal, claw machine inside Strike Zone, June 29. Dad and uncle, Sgt. Darrell Reeder, a supply NCO at Headquarters and Headquarters Troop with 1st Squadron of the 11th Armored Cavalry Regiment, enjoyed some bowling nearby.
