Lead 7 Sends – July 5, 2012

By Command Sgt. Maj. Lance P. Lehr
NTC and Fort Irwin Command Sergeant Major

Practically every day since 9/11, particularly this time of year, men and women, strangers, stop Soldiers to thank them for their service.

Memorial Day, Flag Day, The Army Birthday, Independence Day……the past month or so has provided our country with many opportunities to celebrate, decorate, honor those who serve and demonstrate patriotism.  Many would define a “patriot” as a member of America’s all volunteer force – the less than one percent of our countries population serving today; those who have raised their right hand and swore an oath to support and defend the constitution of the United States.

Something that I’ve come to realize is that service to our country isn’t limited to those who wear or have worn this uniform.   Those whom we fight for and whose freedoms we defend are patriots as well.  Our families, extended families, friends, neighbors and children are also patriots.  They too serve.  They support their Soldiers serving here and fighting abroad and support our Families while we’re deployed.  They represent the strength of our Soldiers, and like our Soldiers, they demonstrate selfless service – putting the needs of others before their own, every day.

While our Soldiers are honored and receive accolades at numerous events and ceremonies this time of year, I want to take this opportunity to thank all of the “patriots” in our community, both in and out of uniform.  Your service to our nation, our Army, our community, and our Soldiers is tremendous and very much appreciated.

Thank you for your service and continue to serve!  You are the strength of our Soldiers.
