The Fort Irwin community has a new way to help those in need.
The Feds Feed Families campaign, a government-wide annual infinitive to provide non-perishable food items to families in need, is in full swing at Fort Irwin. Through Aug. 31, anyone interested in helping out can bring items to donate to the large bin near the entrance to the Fort Irwin Commissary. Or, community members can purchase ready-made bags of food to donate that include water, noodles, canned vegetables, tuna, and drink mix. The bags cost $9.23, not including DeCa surcharge.
All donations this year will benefit Desert Manna Ministries in Barstow. In addition to a homeless shelter, the non-profit organization provides lunches to children in need, help in crisis situation, and aid to travelers stranded along I-15.
“This is just one more opportunity we have to reach out and make a contribution to the community,†said Cynthia Hernandez, commissary director.
A goal of 6,000 pounds of donated food has been set this year for Fort Irwin. Hernandez said she is confident the community can meet that goal.
“I would encourage people to contribute because we’re all here to serve,†she said.
