For students and families who are looking for non-traditional schooling and flexible scheduling the Silver Valley Unified School District is expanding options and offerings in the 2012-2013 school year. The Alternative Education Center (AEC), home to four schools with nine programs, may be your answer. In particular, Silver Valley Academy and its independent study program will expand to include the primary grades beginning 2012-2013. Equally noted while the AEC is located in Daggett, California, near the district office, there is a satellite location at the NTC to serve students and families, beginning with first grade.
Students attend Independent Study by choice and pursue their educational opportunities outside the traditional classroom, yet within the framework of the educational requirements of the Silver Valley Unified School District and the California Department of Education. The nature of Independent Study is to offer a means of an individualized educational plan for students whose needs may be best met through a course of study outside of a regular school setting.
A weekly 2 hour appointment is required and scheduled with a credentialed Independent Study teacher to review progress, turn in and receive new assignments, and to receive support in any academic areas of need. While students work at their own pace, they can also accelerate through their course of study. Also, those in high school may take state approved college courses and or graduate and receive their High School diploma on fast track (early graduation).
