Lewis Elementary transforms kindergarten and increases instructional minutes

Information provided by Silver Valley Unified School District

Congressman Jerry Lewis Elementary School will be implementing California’s new Transitional Kindergarten Program for the 2012-2013 school year as mandated by Senate Bill (SB) 1381 and sanctioned by the Board of Trustees. Children with birthdays between Sept. 1, 2007 and Dec. 2, 2007 are being enrolled in Transitional Kindergarten. While SB 1381 provides a phase-in process, the Board of Trustees approved full implantation with the beginning of the 2012-2013 school year. This is the first year of a two year kindergarten experience.

The Transitional Kindergarten (TK) classes will use the standards aligned OWL curriculum, Opening the World of Learning, by Pearson/Scott Foresman. This developmentally and age-appropriate curriculum is aligned with the district’s adopted K-5 instructional materials.

Forty-six other states currently have kindergarten age requirements that begin in September. This program will provide students with an excellent two-year program for their foundation in school. When they transfer to other states or countries, their age will align and the children will be placed with their same age peers.

In addition to the implementation of the Transitional Kindergarten Program, the hours of Lewis Elementary Kindergarten have changed. All kindergarten and transitional kindergarten students will attend school from 8 a..m. until 2 p.m. on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday. The Wednesday schedule will be from 8 a.m. until noon for all kindergarten and transitional kindergarten students. The increase in instructional minutes will allow the students more instructional time throughout the day. The schedule for the first and second grade students at Lewis Elementary remains the same. School begins at 8 a.m. and students are dismissed at 2:25 p.m. on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday. First- and second-graders attend school from 8 a.m. to 12:25 p.m. on Wednesday.

The Lewis Elementary staff is ready and excited to begin the new school year with these improvements for students. Parents and students are welcome to come “Meet and Greet” their new teacher on Aug. 8 between 2-3 p.m.
