SVUSD implement positive behavior intervention support

Silver Valley Unified School District will begin a three- to five-year implementation process of a research based behavior support system. Lewis Elementary School, Tiefort View Intermediate School, and Fort Irwin Middle School teams have received training. PBIS (Positive Behavior Intervention and Supports) is a framework or approach for assisting school personnel in adopting and organizing evidence-based behavioral interventions into an integrated continuum that enhances academic and social behavior outcomes for all students. The focus is on teaching positive behaviors which are reinforced in schools, families and the community. PBIS enhances decision making skills with children and fosters positive relationships. It can reduce anti-social behaviors such as bullying. These supports include (a) team-based leadership, (b) data-based decision-making, (c) continuous monitoring of student behavior, (d) regular universal screening, and (e) effective on-going professional development.

 

School implementation

Each school sets three to five behavioral expectations for all students that will apply to that school, although it is hoped that these expectations will be reinforced in the family setting and in the community.  The behaviors are presented in a “behavior matrix.”

These expectations are then explicitly taught so that everyone knows not only what the expectations are but also what those expectations look like, sound like, and feel like. Students are acknowledged for using those behaviors and receive positive correction and redirection as necessary.

The PBIS program will be implemented on a kick-off day at each school with an assembly and activities to teach positive behaviors and generate enthusiasm among students.

 

Family and community support

A focus of the PBIS program is to build a positive culture including schools, families and community agencies that work together to support children. Families can support the program by using a family matrix at home to reinforce positive behaviors. Communities support the PBIS program through various methods such as advertising or offering incentives.

 

PBIS at Lewis Elementary School

Lewis Elementary Positive Behavioral Intervention and Supports will use the slogan “Coyote EARS.” The EARS stand for Everyone Acts Responsibly, Respectfully and Safely. The kick-off event for PBIS is Aug. 8 and 9. The PBIS adult team will perform a skit with inappropriate behavior while students will demonstrate and explain the appropriate behavior. Students will be able to earn individual Coyote Dollars in order to support their positive behavior choices. A student store will be set up for the students to spend their Coyote Dollars. The Lewis Elementary staff will work with parents and students in order to help them learn positive behavior in the school setting. Your child’s education is a team effort which relies on school and home working together to support all facets of the child’s education.

 

PBIS at Tiefort View Intermediate School

Tiefort View Intermediate School’s kick-off event for the PBIS will be held on Aug. 10 with an assembly and rotation where students will be introduced to the motto S.H.A.R.P. which stands for Safe, Honest, Accountable, Respectful, and Positive. Students will then follow a rotation to different areas of the school where positive behaviors will be role-played and reinforced with Positive Paw tickets. Students can redeem their tickets for various rewards. Parents and community members are encouraged to support the program.

 

PBIS at Fort Irwin Middle School

Fort Irwin Middle School will get “REAL” by implementing PBIS. The REAL stands for Respect, Engage, Achieve, and Lead. PBIS will begin the moment students arrive on campus on Aug. 9 with the presentation of the school wide matrix by staff. Staff will walk students through the various locations and demonstrate the appropriate behavior to have in each location. This will continue the following week with homerooms creating skits that demonstrate the correct and incorrect behaviors for a specific location relating to self, others, and the environment. Throughout the year, students will receive Get “REAL” tickets as they are recognized by staff getting “REAL”. On Aug. 16, there will be a special presentation by Cary Trivanovich called “Character vs. Bullying.” The goal is to create an environment which provides a safe place for all students to engage in learning.
