WACH Soldiers Celebrate the AMEDD Regimental Birthday

Soldiers and Command from Weed Army Community Hospital celebrate the 237th birthday of the U.S. Army Medical Department.

Formed on July 27th, 1775 by the Continental Congress, the Medical Department Service was authorized for an Army of 20,000 men. To develop loyalty and commitment, foster a sense of belonging, improve unit esprit de corps, and commit the war-fighting ethos, the Service was further established as a Regiment under General Order 27. The U.S. Army Medical Regiment was activated on 28 July, 1986 at Fort Sam Houston, in San Antonio, Texas, the “Home of Army Medicine”. The mission of Army Medicine is to “Provide responsive and reliable health services and influence the Lifespace to improve readiness, save lives, and advance wellness in support of the Force, Military Families, and all those entrusted to our care”.

The Army Medical Department (AMEDD) is comprised of eight branches (or “Corps”), six commissioned corps, one enlisted corps, and the civilian corps. It is led by the Surgeon General of the Army, currently LTG Patricia Horoho, who is also Commander of the U.S. Army Medical Command (MEDCOM).

MEDCOM currently cares for more than 3.95 million beneficiaries – active-duty members of all services, retirees and the family members. In addition to veterinary support provided to all Services, Army medical personnel are engaged in many joint-service efforts. The Office of the Surgeon General oversees joint field operating activities for the Secretary of Defense, and medical units participate in many multiservice deployments/exercises.
