Army Emergency Relief program update

By Bob Lucas
Fort Irwin AER officer

Are you newly PCS’d to Fort Irwin or newly married? Did you know AER can approve up to $4,000 at no interest to allow you to purchase furniture? If you do this, remember that the loan must be repaid prior to an ETS. Want to know more? Did you know that AER can authorize a rental vehicle if you put your vehicle in shop or you travel on emergency leave? This is a no interest loan provided to you based upon discussions with the AER Officer. Another category of AER approval is the need for the spouse or children to obtain emergency dental assistance. AER can provide a no-interest loan to assist in these cases. What do you suppose AER’s biggest case load is each month? Vehicle repair is a huge need at our location and we do loan money at no interest to assist with repairing the primary vehicle or a second vehicle. Although there are many other AER categories of assistance, one of the biggest is “when do we replace a vehicle”? AER can loan up to $4,000 for vehicle replacement if it is determined the cost of repair will be more than the value of the current vehicle. AER does not loan out money for child care, student loans, to buy a new vehicle (if it does not fall under the vehicle replacement category), legal fees, and airline travel for leisure. AER is not considered a loan company. It is an organization that supports the Soldier and/or Family in times of emergencies. Remember, all of your AER needs must be identified on an AER Form 600 or AER Form 700, signed by you, and approval recommended by the First Sergeant or the Commander prior to visiting the AER Office.
