Troopers from the Horse Detachment, 11th Armored Cavalry Regiment held a free cavalry show at Fort Irwin Aug 3. The show featured both their traditional weapons demonstrations and a new segment, called “The Battle of Ojos Azules.” The new segment featured historical information and showed the audience what a day in the life of a cavalryman circa 1915 was really like.
Families enjoy the chance to interact with animals as part of the “Back to School” Cavalry Show at Fort Irwin, Calif., Aug. 3. Horse Detachment, 11th Armored Cavalry Regiment sponsored the show as a way to show the community what they do.
The show was held as a back-to-school celebration and was free and open to the public. The event was a family friendly affair as the Horse Detachment Family Readiness Group offered potato sack races, kids’ rodeos and hay rides.
The pack mule demonstration proved almost as popular as the horse show. Troopers used their skills learned at the Marine Animal Packing Course to lead a fully packed mule over a series of obstacles.
In between shows, parents and children alike got to meet with the troopers and their animals. The troopers answered any questions and monitored interactions between the children and the animals. The event was catered by the Horse Detachment’s Family Readiness Group, with all profits going back to the FRG.
“It really was a great opportunity to spend some time with the family,” said Julia Lecours, a military spouse. “It was nice to have a night out without having to drive the 35 miles to Barstow.”
The show was a chance for families and troopers to interact with one another during a fun outdoor event.
