Soldiers perform in the 2011 U.S. Army Soldier Show. The show will come to Fort Irwin Aug. 15.

This August, Fort Irwin Family and Morale, Welfare, and Recreation is hosting a variety of events for Soldiers and families, including the 2012 U.S. Army Soldier Show, the inaugural Fort Irwin Golf Tournament, and the Sesame Street/USO Experience for Military Families. Following is more details about these events.

2012 U.S. Army Soldier Show – Aug. 15 – Gourmet Food Trucks at 5 p.m., performance at 7 p.m. – Freedom Fitness Center, Third Street

The Soldier Show touches all in attendance through laughter, dance and song. This year’s production “Army Strong,” explores what it is that makes our Army strong. It highlights the different strengths of our Soldiers and their Families.

The U.S. Army Soldier Show promotes resiliency by giving fellow troops an opportunity to unwind, relax and re-evaluate the world in which they live, along with the way of life that they defend. And how they do it: Army Strong. This is a free show; tickets are not required. Seats are available on a first-come, first-served basis. Doors open 30 minutes prior to show time.

Before the show, three gourmet food trucks will be on site at Freedom Fitness Center so that Soldiers and Families can purchase dinner (and dessert!) and socialize with friends. The food trucks will be serving burgers (Chubby’s), wood-fired pizza (Where’s the Fire Gourmet Pizza), and Italian ice (Mustache Mike’s Italian Ice). The premier sponsor of the 2012 U.S. Army Soldier Show is Army G-1’s Sexual Harassment and Assault Response and Prevention Program (SHARP). Supporting sponsor: University of Phoenix.

Inaugural Fort Irwin Golf Tournament – Aug. 18 – Check in at 7:30 a.m. – Apple Valley Golf Course, 15200 Rancherias Rd, Apple Valley, Calif.

This golf tournament is a four-man scramble with chance to win a 2012 Honda Civic from Valley Hi Honda! All proceeds from this event go toward supporting special events and non-appropriated fund construction projects.

Registration fee includes breakfast, 18 holes of golf, games, awards and banquet. Extra games and raffle tickets will be available for purchase at the event.

For those wishing to participate in the Fort Irwin Inaugural Golf Tournament, registration is $75/person, space permitting. You can register at Shock Wave or Strike Zone. If you are an individual or group of less than four people wanting to play, please call Janet Ford at (760) 380-3509.

Sesame Street/USO Experience for Military Families – Aug. 24 at 2 and 5 p.m. and Aug. 25 at 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. – Freedom Fitness Center, Third Street

The Muppets bring their message of joy, love and support to families on bases in the U.S. and overseas. The show recognizes the sad times, but doesn’t stop there. From the first minutes, kids are up on their feet, singing and dancing. For a while, they can forget the everyday struggles of going to birthday parties, school concerts or soccer games without mommy or daddy cheering from the sidelines.

This is a free show for military families thanks to USO; tickets are not required. Seats are available on a first-come, first-served basis. Doors open 30 minutes prior to each performance time.
