Update on Army Emergency Relief program

By Bob Lucas
Fort Irwin AER officer

Army Emergency Relief is a non-profit organization dedicated to helping active-duty and retired Soldiers and their family members by providing emergency financial assistance.

Did you know that the AER can assist Soldiers and family members by providing a grant, whereby the Soldier is not required to pay back the money? Although not common, a grant is given when repayment in the foreseeable future would cause undue hardship. To decide if you have an undue hardship, carefully evaluate the following:

  • Your personal financial situation, including current and projected income
  • Other assets
  • Ability to start repayment immediately or in the foreseeable future
  • Ability to complete repayment within a reasonable time.

A combination of a loan and a grant will be made when the individual’s situation precludes repayment of the full amount of a loan, but partial repayment can be made without undue hardship. If a grant or partial grant is required, comments should be placed in the remarks section of AER Form 600 or AER Form 700 by you and the first sergeant or commander who is recommending approval of the AER assistance. Army retirees can fill out the form and come directly to the AER Office for assistance. The forms can also be obtained by visiting www.irwin.army.mil and clicking on the AER tab under the “Soldiers” menu, or by visiting Bldg. 561. For more information, call 380-3513.
