FMWR hosts inaugural golf tournament

Fort Irwin community members take part in the Fort Irwin Golf Tournament Aug. 18 at Apple Valley Country Club and Golf Course Aug. 18.

Birdies, bogies, divots and hula-hoops…hula-hoops? There was something for everyone at the inaugural Fort Irwin golf tournament Aug. 18 in Apple Valley, Calif.

FMWR hosted the four-man scramble at the Apple Valley Country Club and Golf Course that saw teams from across the installation bare the August heat for a chance to win a new car, bragging rights, and other prizes. While the new (slightly dimpled) Honda went back to the car lot unclaimed, lowest score or the coveted hole-in-one wasn’t the only competition on the fairway. Additional events at various holes such as hula-hoop, or leap-frog kept everyone’s spirits high and ensured that all had an opportunity to excel… at something, if not at golf.

The registration fee included breakfast, 18 holes of golf, carts, an awards ceremony, banquet and prizes. Proceeds from the tournament come back to the installation and are used to support special events and non-appropriated fund construction projects for our community.

More than 100 participated in this inaugural event. Sponsors included: Valley Hi Honda, DRYKEF Inc., University of Phoenix, SYSCO, Sparkle Car Wash, Country Inn & Suites, ITT Exelis-Goldstone, AUSA, Sgt. Fuzzbuddy’s, The Exchange, and Sight Waves.

Top honors went to the team “ITT Exelis” followed by team “Low Ball.”
