First rotation, but not first time training at NTC

Agustin Rodriguez and son, Spc. Jacob A. Rodriguez.

Local young man returns to NTC as Soldier after having trained here with California Cadet Corps

Specialist Jacob Alfonso Rodriguez trained as a teenager at the National Training Center numerous times with the Applied Leadership Program under the California Cadet Corps. And now, the son of Agustin Rodriguez – a Department of the Army employee at Public Affairs Office here – is here for training with his Army unit for rotation 12-10.

The younger Rodriguez is a military policeman with 571st MP Company from Fort Lewis, Wash. He has been serving for just over three years, having enlisted after graduating from San Gorgonio High School at San Bernardino, Calif., in 2009. Jacob was part of the Corps program while in high school when Fort Irwin and the NTC would serve as a venue for trainings and leadership courses held by the Corps. Jacob said that he attended trainings at the NTC about 10 times. His current training is preparing him for an eventual deployment to Afghanistan later this year.

“I love the NTC and I am eager to see the great rotational training here,” Jacob said.

Dad said he is glad to see that his son decided to remain committed to the military profession.

“He has grown and learned a lot from the military environment,” Agustin said.

The Corps program was instrumental in helping his son decide to enlist in the Army, said Agustin.

“It was definitely very helpful, because while in that program they make decisions whether they would like to select a military lifestyle,” dad said. “Obviously, my son seemed to like the military lifestyle and career, because of all the things he learned and all the things he is doing now. He’s really enjoyed it so far. His wife is also part of the Army. She also enlisted in the active duty component. That was also a good thing.”

Jacob is married to Spc. Jennifer Rodriguez, an MP with 66th MP Company at Fort Lewis. The dual military couple is expecting their first child in October and plan to name him Jason.
