Lewis Elementary remains on Program Improvement status, but we’re dedicated to focusing on each child
As many of you are aware, recent state test results at Lewis Elementary resulted in the school being placed in Program Improvement status in the 2011-2012 school year.
Based on the measurements of No Child Left Behind, schools that fail to make adequate yearly progress for two consecutive years enter PI status. Lewis did not meet the Adequate Yearly Progress set forth by the federal mandates and in 2011 the school entered year one of PI designation.
In addition to meeting federal mandates, schools in California are also held to state mandates known as the Academic Performance Index. According to district Assistant Superintendent Micheline Miglis, these measurements are a one-time event in the learning life of students.
“The measurements do not take into account where the child was at the beginning of the school year and how much growth took place,” Miglis said.
Results are based on the scores of the annual California Standards Test and at Lewis Elementary School, second grade is the only grade assessed.
“One of the best outcomes of the No Child Left Behind Act of 2011 was calling our attention to all the sub-groups in the school,” Miglis said. “Nevertheless, measuring any school on the basis of one assessment during one week of the school year likely doesn’t tell the whole story.”
The district wants parents to know what we are doing to address concerns and to continue to improve the educational development of your children. In particular, recent initiatives include intentionally focusing on every learner (by name, by need, by skill) and conducting regular student monitoring conferences, where each teacher and the principal review each child’s progress individually and determine the next steps and course of action for academic achievement. Students also benefit from teaming time and Coyote Den, where they receive specific instruction to meet their individual needs.
We have seen outstanding results in the 2011-2012 school year and expect this to translate to the results on the CST. Our students and teachers worked very hard and I’m confident the results will show that.
Earlier this summer, SVUSD distributed a letter to the families of Lewis students informing them of the school’s standing. It’s important to know you have options. If your child attends Lewis, you may choose to have your child attend one of two elementary non-PI schools in the district, and receive district-paid transportation.
The district will provide transportation as long as the student’s assigned school remains a PI school, however your child may stay in that school through its highest grade. If the demand for PI transfers exceeds funds available, priority will be given to lowest achieving, low-income students. Your preference of a non-PI school will be taken into consideration.
