Artist’s rendering of the Fort Irwin Community Garden.

The construction of the Fort Irwin Community Garden will take place this weekend with the help of club members, volunteers and a generous contribution from The Home Depot in Barstow, Calif.

The gate in more detail.

The Home Depot will be donating materials ($10,000 worth) and expertise this weekend for the project. However, additional volunteers are needed for the work to be performed tomorrow, Saturday and Sunday. The garden’s location is Barstow Road and Inner Loop Road, next to the dog park. Volunteers don’t have to be members of the Garden Club – the entire Fort Irwin community is welcome to participate. The fun begins at 8 a.m., each day. Refreshments and lunch will be provided; discounts to fast food venues on post will also be provided, courtesy of the Exchange.

So, if you already wear jeans for casual Fridays, why not bring along a pair of gloves, comfortable shoes and volunteer a bit of your time to a fabulous cause. If you would like to eventually be part of the club, the entire Fort Irwin community is eligible to plant in the garden. Contact the Garden Club president, Capt. Jose Gutierrez, at (915) 240-1250 for more information.
