The first all enlisted court-martial, convened in France in July 1953. The UCMJ was drafted in 1949, approved in 1950, and took effect on May 31, 1951 during the Korean War. It was the most comprehensive change in military law in America’s history, providing individual Soldier’s with needed legal safeguards and establishing a system of judicial review comparable to the civilian system.

During August, several Soldiers stationed at the National Training Center and Fort Irwin were found guilty of offenses under the Uniform Code of Military Justice and received non-judicial punishment following Article 15 proceedings.

Two Soldiers in the rank of specialist were convicted of Article 92 offenses for spice use and possession. The Soldiers’ punishment: a reduction in pay grade to E-1; forfeiture of $745 in pay for two months; 45 days of restriction, and; 45 days of extra duty.

A Soldier in the rank of private first class was convicted of an Article 134 offense for drunk and disorderly conduct. The Soldier’s punishment: 14 days restrictions and 14 days of extra duty.

A Soldier in the rank of private was convicted of an Article 112a offense for marijuana use. The Soldier’s punishment: forfeiture of $745 in pay for two months; 45 days of restriction, and; 45 days of extra duty.
