The National Training Center and Fort Irwin held a graduation ceremony to honor 16 non-commissioned officers, who completed the Battle Staff NCO Course Friday.

The five-week course prepares sergeants for positions as members of a unit staff at the battalion level or higher.
According to the United States Army Sergeants’ Major Academy, the Battle Staff NCO Course focuses on the major areas of Plans, Orders and Annexes, Graphics and Overlays, Military Intelligence, and Combat Service Support.
Guest speaker, Command Sgt. Major William Elliott, command sergeant major for 2916th Aviation Battalion, 916th Support Brigade, talked about the importance of developing the four basic skills required of a non-commissioned officer: Leadership, Training, Discipline and Standards.
“The sergeant is a leader, and leadership is a process through which a sergeant accomplishes his mission and takes care of his Soldiers,” said Elliott.
Elliott stressed the training is a primary function of leaders and that discipline is a direct result of conducting training to established standards.
The sergeant must meet or exceed the standard, by training, discipline and leadership unified in purpose direction and motivation, he said.
“I know the last five weeks have been challenging at times, but by meeting or exceeding the standards you have demonstrated that you are disciplined, trained and ready. to lead.”
