The chapel members donated $4,055.80 towards providing baskets for Soldiers and Families this Thanksgiving. Mr. Bob Lucas, the POC for the program received the check from CH (COL) Fleury.
CH (LTC) Ghergich noted that a similar offering will be received for the December Food Basket drive. Last year the chapel congregations donated around $5,000 towards the program. This year the goal is $8,000. Lucy Castorena, the Accounting Technician for the RSO mentioned that in addition to the food basket program that the chapel congregations had also provided around $17,000 in emergency assistance to Soldiers and Family Members in the form of Commissary Vouchers and Food Pantry items in the last fiscal year.
The Holiday Food Basket program plans to provide up to 300 baskets for Soldiers with Families, E1-E4, based upon need. Mr. Lucas said that unit First Sergeants will identify Soldiers to receive the baskets. Details of the program were briefed at the last Community Service Council meeting and instructions were provided to CSMs for dissemination to their units. All requests for assistance must be received NLT November 14th for both the Thanksgiving and Christmas Food Basket program. Thanksgiving baskets will be ready for pick up from 19-21 November. Christmas baskets will be ready for pick-up from 17-19 December. First Sergeants will be notified prior to those dates based upon the applications received at ACS. The Fort Irwin Commissary will once again assist in putting together our holiday meals based upon the donated money received through DFMWR.
