11ACR Horse Detachment holds Fall Festival

A Trooper with Horse Detachment, 11th Armored Cavalry Regiment, demonstrates his horsemanship during a cavalry show at the Horse Detachment’s Fall Festival, Oct. 26.

The Horse Detachment, 11th Armored Cavalry Regiment, held a Fall Festival as a way to not only interact with the community, but also to raise money for 11th ACR troop-level Family Readiness Groups, here, Oct. 26.

The event included food, games and a cavalry show.

“The event was a spectacular success,” said Capt. Lewis Vine, commander of the Horse Detachment. “I was a little worried at first that it would be a flop, but the people steadily kept coming in, and before long our second overflow lot was full. At least 600 people attended. All the Horse Detachment and Regimental Support Squadron Troopers and FRGs, went above and beyond. I would like to specifically recognize my Operations Noncommissioned Officer, Sgt. Steffen Roman, for putting it together.”

It was a family friendly event, with many parents bringing their children in costume. Games like bobbing for ducks and pop the balloon provided kids with entertainment. Horse rides and face painting were also held for children of all ages.

People placed bids on the chance to pie senior leadership in the face with the proceeds going to Family Readiness Groups.

“The Fall Festival was amazing,” said Taylor M. Holmes, an 11th ACR spouse. “It was a great opportunity to get out with my family and raise money for the Regiment’s FRGs.”

Another main attraction was the haunted hay ride. For a small donation patrons were treated to live actors and static displays, ensuring everyone had a terrifyingly good time. Throughout the event Troopers and their family’s got the opportunity to bid on the right to put a whip cream pie in the face of their leadership.

“I will take a pie in the face any day, as long as the proceeds are going to a good cause like lessening the cost of Troopers attending the ball,” said Lt. Col. Scott McFarland, commander of RSS, 11th ACR.

An open bonfire with Smores provided the perfect end to a fun filled night.

Horse Detachment hosts events like these give Soldiers and Families of Fort Irwin something unique to experience, said Vine. They also like to have events like these before rotation starts, as it gives Families a nice event to enjoy together before their Troopers go out to train America’s Army.
