Safety Tip of the Week

Cold weather often inspires people to use space heaters to take the chill out of the air. Heating fires are the second leading cause of all residential fires following cooking. The overwhelming majority of space heater accidents are the result of improper use, failure to follow the manufacturer’s instructions, or incomplete knowledge of basic space heater safety. According to the United States Fire Administration, heating fires account for 36 percent of all residential home fires every year. If you are thinking of purchasing or replacing a space heater, choose newer models that have all of the current safety features, like overheat protection and a tip-over switch. Under no circumstances use an extension cord or power strip to provide power to any heater. Heaters must be plugged directly into an electrical outlet.
