Mrs. Viola Lucero, widow of Domitilio Lucero, accepted the Silver Star award on behalf of her husband from National Training Center and Fort Irwin Commander Brig. Gen. Terry Ferrell in Newberry Springs, Calif., Nov. 5. Mr. Lucero was awarded the Silver Star posthumously for his actions during World War II. Lucero was a sergeant with 391st Bombardment Group, Air Corps. He was awarded the medal for gallantry in action, while serving as engineer-gunner of a B-26 aircraft dispatched to bomb a railroad viaduct at Ahrweiler, Germany, Dec. 23, 1944. Lucero was seriously wounded by an enemy fighter’s cannon fire. Although thrown from his position, Lucero crawled back to his post and although his armament was inoperative, he gallantly continued to inform his pilot of enemy aircraft positions.
