Army Reserve Pfc. Janeen Phelps (left) of Las Vegas sings Aretha Franklin’s “Think” to get the attention of Pvt. Alberth Madrigal of Fort Drum, N.Y. The song “Treat Her Like a Lady,” by the Temptations, and Franklin’s “R.E.S.P.E.C.T.” are also featured during the Soldier Show themed “Ready and Resilient.” Army Installation Management Command and Army Entertainment dedicated a section of the Soldier Show to SHARP, the Army’s Sexual Harassment/Assault Response and Prevention program.

The 2013 U.S. Army Soldier Show “Ready and Resilient” conducted its performance at Fort Irwin, May 24. This year marks the modern Army Soldier Show’s 30th season, which began in 1984 and has roots in Broadway theater as far back as 1917.

The 75-minute performance was a high-energy live musical production that showcased the talents of 22 Soldiers (15 performers and seven technicians) selected by audition from throughout the Army. Soldiers first, they are artists who have a passion for music, dance and performing, with specialties ranging from information technology to combat medicine. The show was assembled and rehearsed five weeks prior to the four-month tour of military installations across the nation.

“Every American, military-affiliated or not, will be able to see themselves in the show,” said Army Soldier Show Artistic Director Victor Hurtado. “The fact that the show is entertaining someone is already taking them away [from their mindset], but the messaging is going to inspire.”

The Soldier Show tour goes through September 19, ending at Fort Sam Houston, Texas.

National Training Center and Fort Irwin Command Sgt. Maj. Lance P. Lehr and commanding general, Brig. Gen. Ted Martin, accept a plaque from the cast and crew of the 2013 U.S. Army Soldier Show, May 24.
