A young man’s attention to safety

At approximately 7:25 a.m. on July 30, I witnessed young Raven Nickerson exit the Shoppette, hang his bag on his bike handlebars, put on his helmet and his eye-pro (which I think look pretty cool), then proceeded to look both ways in the parking lot to make sure he could safely move out!

At the other end of the parking lot, he stopped, dismounted his bike, and moved over the curb onto the gravel to make his way to the crosswalk.

I was impressed by this young man’s attention to safety, and it was obvious this is a normal practice for him. His actions serve as a great example for the hundreds of young citizens of our community, as well as a reminder to our adults that safety should be part of everyone’s cultural norms.

I approached Mr. Nickerson and introduced myself and congratulated him for setting an outstanding safety example for our community. I then presented him with a Fort Irwin USAG “Thank You” chip.
(The kid’s shirt is pretty cool too!)
