Changing of the Stole

The Contemporary Protestant Worship Service that meets at 11 a.m. every Sunday morning at the Fort Irwin Center Chapel was able to participate in the “Changing of the Stole Ceremony” between Chaplain (Lt. Col.) Doug Prentice and Chaplain (Maj.) Bart Herndon, July 28. Chaplain Prentice was departing for a follow-on assignment to Germany, and was relinquishing his duties and responsibilities as the senior pastor of this congregation over to Chaplain Herndon. The Changing of the Stole Ceremony is a rich tradition in the U.S. Army Chaplain Corps—one that symbolizes the act of Elisha “taking up the mantle of responsibility” from Elijah in 2 Kings, Chapter 2 and continued to serve the Lord in “his calling” to minister to God’s people. Chaplain (Col.) Terry McBride presided over the ceremony, and led the congregation in a “Prayer of Dedication” over Chaplain Prentice and Chaplain Herndon. It was a great Sunday to celebrate one Chaplain relinquishing his “pastoral role” to another Chaplain. The congregation was very sorry to see Chaplain Prentice depart, but is looking with great anticipation to see how Chaplain Herndon will serve the Lord in “his calling,” just like Elisha did many years ago, and serve as the senior pastor of this congregation.
