Goodwill Southern California helping Fort Irwin Veterans find employment

The Goodwill Southern California Transitioning Veteran Employment Program is celebrating nearly one year of service at the National Training Center and Fort Irwin by hosting a military appreciation barbecue with food, beverages, prizes and honored speakers. The anniversary event is being co-hosted with the Army Career and Alumni Program (ACAP) at Kyle Coyote Spray Park at Fort Irwin, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., Sept. 18

The TVEP is a first of its kind program, offering job placement and employment services to military personnel transitioning out of the Army. The TVEP staff offer one-on-one career counseling, access to employment preparation courses, assistance navigating the workforce system and locating services outside of the High Desert, based on participant choice as identified in an Individual Employment Plan. By engaging military staff up to 18 months before their release from service, the program offers participants a pathway to success as they re-integrate into civilian life.

“As veterans move from military to civilian roles, they face several unique challenges which currently include a strained economy and high unemployment rates,” said Craig Smith, President and CEO of Goodwill Southern California. “These dedicated men and women are leaders and tremendous civic assets – they’ve served us and now can serve them – by partnering with Fort Irwin and offering this program to ease their transition.”

The success of the program is marked by eight community employment placements, 13 educational and one vocational training placement since its inception of November 2012. A total of 42 military personnel have enrolled in the program exceeding the first year goal of 40, with nearly four months left in the fiscal year.

The TVEP is located at the Fort Irwin ACAP center, building 111. Hours of operation are Monday through Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. For more information, visit www.goodwillsocal.org or contact a TVEP representative directly at 380-9057.
