In a time of crisis, this community gave 100%

The Fort Irwin community has been through a lot in the past few weeks. We got off to a great start with school starting on August 8 and back then everything looked happy and bright. Then two weeks later we were struck by our second power outage of the season and the flash flood on August 25, followed by another power outage. That is a lot of trauma for a small community living in the middle of the Mojave Desert, but this community came together and pitched in to help each other and to do what was best for the greater good.

I’d like to thank all the families, who weathered these storms with such grace and incredible stamina. I want to thank the units, 916th, 11th ACR, Ops Group, MEDDAC and DENTAC, who just jumped in and got the trucks rolling, got the ice moving, got the generators placed and running, and when Lewis Elementary was devastated by flood water they jumped in feet first to help with the clean-up and the move.

I’d like to thank the many folks at Public Works, who were always the first to respond to the many challenges that pounded the installation this season and who are still working diligently to fix, repair, and clean-up the 194 buildings that suffered damage. And, this work will continue for some time into the future for the Fort Irwin DPW.

A big thank you goes out to all the people, military and civilian, who manned the Emergency Operations Center for hours into the night on four occasions. And to all the emergency crews who were called into action in the middle of many nights – this community thanks you for all you do to keep us safe.

I am proud to be a member of this community and I am proud to be a part of this tremendous team, because what I have witnessed this far into my very short tenure here is a dynamic force of energy that is simply unstoppable. This community has a lot to be proud of and a lot to be thankful for – mostly we can be thankful for each other and we can be proud of the strength each of us brings to the table in a time of crisis. I thank you all.
