Parent to Parent to host reading workshop, book exchange

Lewis Elementary School students and their siblings attended an Early Literacy Workshop hosted by Fort Irwin Parent to Parent at the post library, Aug. 29. The 32 children who attended listened to the story Desert Night Desert Day and learned about characteristics of desert animals. They made desert sunset collages to take home.

The Fort Irwin Parent to Parent team and the Post Library are offering parents a chance to exchange gently used books their kids have outgrown for “new” ones. Parent to Parent will host a reading workshop and book exchange, Sept. 24.

The event, called Growing a Great Reader, will take place at the Post Library located at 331 2nd Street. Registration will begin at 11:40 a.m., and the workshop begins promptly at noon. Attendees must attend the 20-minute workshop in order to participate in the book exchange.

Here’s how it works: Parents bring children’s books in good condition to exchange. For every book they bring, they receive one ticket. After the workshop, parents can use their tickets to “shop” for other used books. The event will conclude by 1 p.m. Any leftover books will be donated to the Post Library or the Military and Civilian Spouses Club Thrift Store.

Active duty parents are welcome to attend the workshop and book exchange. Parents should note that childcare is not provided at this event.

Parent to Parent welcomes used book donations from those who are unable to attend the exchange. More information about this and other Parent to Parent events can be found on the Parent to Parent – Fort Irwin, CA Facebook page. For details call Karen Knott at 386-0007 or Shari Dailey at 386-8495.
