Red Ribbon Week is Oct. 23-31

Red Ribbon Week will be observed Oct. 23-3 1 across the country. The campaign helps raise awareness regarding the need for alcohol, tobacco and other drug and violence prevention, early intervention, and treatment services. It is the largest, most visible prevention awareness campaign observed annually in the United States. The 2013 Red Ribbon theme is “The best me is drug free.”

Red Ribbon Week began after the kidnapping, torture and brutal murder of Drug Enforcement Administration Agent Enrique Camarena in 1985. Camarena had been working undercover in Mexico were his efforts resulted in the eradication of some drug production operations, which angered leaders of several drug cartels. The cartels sought revenge, murdering key informants and then, on Feb. 7, 1985, they kidnapped Camarena.

Camarena was a believer that one person can make a difference and he sacrificed his life to prevent drugs from entering the United States.

These dramatics events were chronicled in U.S. national news, exposing the dark world of drug trafficking, including how far drug traffickers would go to maintain power and control. In Camarena’s home town of Calexico, Calif., the public outpouring of support turned into an organized community response. Citizens wore red ribbons to signify their support for prevention efforts in order to reduce the demand for illegal drugs and illegal use of legal drugs in America. In 1988, Red Ribbon Week was recognized nationally with President Ronald and First Lady Nancy Reagan serving as the Honorary Chairs.

ASAP will be distributing red ribbon bags to schools on Oct. 21. Ribbons and bracelets will be given to all directorates on Oct. 22. MWR is offering discounts if you wear a red ribbon (or another red item) on these certain days and locations:

  • Oct. 23 – 10% off Arts and Crafts Center
