Mojave River Trail Days shows off best of the West

The Horse Detachment of the 11th Armored Cavalry Regiment also participated in the celebration by demonstrating riding skills.

The 2013 Mojave River Trail Days event provided young and old with sights and sounds from the days of the Old West.

The fourth annual celebration at Helendale, Calif., about an hour from Fort Irwin and near the old Route 66, was attended by leadership of this installation. Servicemembers and Veterans of this post participated as re-enactors, and Soldiers of the 11th Armored Cavalry Regiment’s Horse Detachment displayed their riding skills.

Events included Civil War re-enactments, trick rope demonstrations, Western-themed skits, games for kids, and musical performances by Duke Michaels and Charlie Ray.

It was all for the cause of keeping history alive and helping out the Happy Trails Children’s Foundation Cooper Home non-profit organization. Kim Cox, general manager of Helendale Community Service Department, stated that a portion of the event proceeds went to the non-profit.

David Crichton, of Plans, Analysis and Integration Office with Garrison, portrayed an American Civil War soldier.

According to the non-profit’s Web site, the Cooper Home serves as a long-term residential care and treatment center for severely abused boys. Approximately 40 boys between the ages of 10 and 16 live at the home. Child Protective Services and county courts place the boys in the home where they receive group and individual therapy. Since the Cooper Home opened in 1997, more than 850 children have received shelter, care and treatment services.

The Mojave River Trail Days featured re-enactments of life in the Old West, such as this blacksmith pounding on an anvil.

Fort Irwin United States Army Garrison commander Col. Jon Braga presents a plaque to Ron Clark, vice president of Helendale Community Service Department.

John Antes, a senior non-commissioned officer with Directorate of Plans, Training, Mobility and Security, took part as a Civil War soldier during Mojave River Trails Days.
