Captain Liza Bortz, of Weed Army Community Hospital’s Preventive Medicine department, administers a flu vaccination to National Training Center’s Commanding General, Brig. Gen. Ted Martin. Martin was one of the first Soldiers to be vaccinated at Fort Irwin as part of the Army’s seasonal influenza vaccination program. He vowed, “The National Training Center and Fort Irwin will be first to be 100 percent Active Duty compliant with the FORSCOM mandate!”

An Army Surgeon General message to all Army activities on Aug. 6 noted that in the United States, influenza results in over 25 million reported cases, over 150,000 hospitalizations due to serious complications, and over 30,000 deaths annually.

Weed Army Community Hospital Preventive Medicine is assisting by providing flu vaccines to all Fort Irwin units at scheduled times and locations. Servicemembers who are unable to attend and Department of the Army civilians can receive their vaccine at the Preventive Medicine Walk-In Clinic, building 172, on Wednesdays from 8 a.m. to noon and 1 p.m. to 3:45 p.m.
