National Breast Cancer Awareness Month 5K Fun Run/Walk a huge success!

Runners make a turn at the 2013 Fort Irwin Breast Cancer Awareness Month 5K Fun Run/Walk, here, Oct. 12.

On Oct. 12 more than 300 members of the Fort Irwin community joined together to support those who are currently battling cancer, honor those who have survived the battle, and remember those who have fallen.

Those community members came out to the Fort Irwin Breast Cancer Awareness Month 5K Fun Run/Walk. Participants warmed up with Zumba by Bea Jackson while grooving to music provided by DJ Eric “Inphamous” Garland and enjoyed a karate demonstration given by Hayes Karate Unlimited. While everyone who participated received recognition for their support, the overall course winners were Greg Flores (male) and Capt. Megan Thurman (female).

Breast cancer is the second most common cancer (behind skin cancer) in females in the United States and the second most common cause of cancer death in women (behind lung cancer). According to the American Cancer Society, an estimated 232,340 new cases of breast cancer are expected to be diagnosed among women in the U.S. this year and about 2,240 new cases are expected in men. An estimated 39,620 women are expected to die from the disease in 2013.

The good news is breast cancer is more likely to be cured if it is caught early. If all women adhered to guidelines for obtaining mammograms, the survivability rate from breast cancer would increase significantly. Early detection is key!

Be proactive and take charge of your own breast health by understanding recommended screening methods, making regular visits to your healthcare provider and getting your routine mammograms! The average patient age of 40-69 should receive a mammogram every one to two years. If you need to schedule your mammogram, contact Weed Army Community Hospital’s HEDIS Nurse at 380-2721 for an appointment.

Families brought out their children and pets for the event.
