Catch the reading bug

National Training Center and Fort Irwin Commander Brig. Gen. Ted Martin reads “How to Bake an American Pie” during a “Tell Me A Story” event, here, Nov. 25.

When the commanding general of the National Training Center reads to you, well, why would you not listen?

To the kids listening to Brig. Gen. Ted Martin read a book, it didn’t matter the rank or the position – all they saw and heard was a personable, good reader who spent some quality time with them.

The kids, all between the ages of 4 -12, were participating in “Tell Me a Story” facilitated by the Parent to Parent Team at Tiefort View Intermediate School, here, Nov. 25. Martin read the book “How to Bake an American Pie,” by Karma Wilson. According to Wilson’s Web site, the story is “about all the special, magical ingredients that have made our country great” and “these ingredients include things like meekness, might, majesty, liberty, forgiveness, diversity and grace.”

Martin took advantage of the patriotic theme of the book and asked the audience to stand and salute whenever he read the words “Fourth of July.” Kids and parents obliged and had a good time with the participation.

Command Sgt. Maj. Ronaldo Jordan, the ranking non-commissioned officer with Sidewinder Team in Operations Group, here, and wife Tina brought their 6-year-old son, Jace, to take part in the fun. Jordan expressed that the event helps to encourage youngsters to be active in reading.

“It promotes interest in reading and shows kids to put their hands on books,” Jordan said. “It also enhances visits to the library.”

Prior to the reading, the band and choir from Fort Irwin Middle School sang and played “America the Beautiful.” Karen Knott, with Parent to Parent, thanked organizations and individuals for helping support the reading party, including: the Military Child Education Coalition, TVIS Principal Shannon Hansen and the DeCA Commissary.
