Rising to the occasion

One of Fort Irwin’s very own has been selected as a finalist for the Army-wide competition, Operation Rising Star.

First Lt. Derrick Bishop, executive officer of H Company, 2nd Squadron, 11th Armored Cavalry Regiment, here, will represent Fort Irwin and is one of 12 finalists announced by Army Entertainment to vie for the top spot this month.

Bishop’s acapella video-taped performance of “Rolling in the Deep” put him in the group of finalists, who were judged at Installation Management Command headquarters, Joint Base San Antonio, Texas. The armor officer said he was surprised, but ecstatic, after being notified of winning, and credits the 2/11 ACR for cheering him on during the Fort Irwin finals in October.

“My unit is extremely supportive,” Bishop said.

Bishop, who is a weekend karaoke singer at Samuel Adams Grille, here, will next compete in San Antonio.

The finalists will participate in daily performances and be judged on their singing talent and stage presence. Each round of competition will be recorded and the general public will be able to view and vote for their favorite performer. Every stage of the competition will be scored based on a combination of votes from the public and judges.

The initial performances will be available online at http://www.OpRisingStar.com, Dec. 8, followed by semi-finals and finals on Dec. 10 and 12. The winner of the 2013 competition will be revealed on Dec. 14. The competition takes place at the Fort Sam Houston Theatre.
