Young minds using scientific method

Pamela Harvin, Fort Irwin School Liaison Officer, judges a project during a Barstow Consolidated Science
Fair at Barstow Community College,
Feb. 19.

Did you know that pill bugs prefer wet soil? Or that dish soap bubbles last longer than hand soap?

Using the scientifc method, local students applied their analytical skills to determine those conclusions and develop their research skills along the way.  They did it at the Barstow Consolidated Science Fair at Barstow Community College, Feb. 19.

Students from Barstow schools, third through eighth grade, participated in a variety of categories as diverse as biology, physics, chemistry and product application. Fort Irwin Soldiers and family members attended and saw their children compete with some intuitive and impressive projects.

The projects were uniformly presented on cardboard sheets with purpose, findings and process shown on each display. Service members and high school students served as judges and based their decisions on presentation, Danielle King and Stacia Pace, were very grateful for the splendid support offered by Fort Irwin and its families.

“You guys are great!” King said as the judging of the projects was wrapping up.  “Thanks so much for coming out. It means so much to us and the kids.”

Fort Irwin’s participation in these events goes a long way with endearing students to the Army, said Pamela Harvin, Fort Irwin School Liason Officer.  The increased involvement of Fort Irwin personnel and family members has a direct positive influence on relations with our post and Barstow.  The effort applied by the students was truly remarkable. As artists, creative thinkers and problem solvers, there is no doubt that this budding generation of Americans has what it takes to continue contributing to our nation.
