Easter egg hunt euphoria

Children take to the field as an Easter egg hunt gets underway here, April 19.

How do you get 1,000 people to an event on Fort Irwin?

Invite children to an Easter egg hunt. That is what Protest Women of the Chapel here did, April 19 – one day before Easter – when they asked the community to bring children in grades fifth or younger to participate in the hunt. Children swarmed the “blue track” field and playground here, where PWOC had placed about 5,000 plastic eggs filled with candy.

Cari Verde, in charge of publicity with PWOC, mentioned that her organization counted up to 750 children, but approximated a higher attendance.

“We estimate there were over 1,000 children at the event,” Verde stated in an email.

The mid-morning occasion began with a benediction from National Training Center and Fort Irwin Chaplain (Col.) Terry McBride. The Easter bunny also made an appearance, much to the joy of children. Directorate of Emergency Services participated by having a static display of a fire truck and police car. The event helped in creating unity within the community, Verde said.

“It is important to have events like this for the community in order to provide families with the opportunity to participate in fun activities together,” Verde said. “It is great for children to have an enjoyable time in a safe, family-friendly environment.”

The event also provided an opportunity to raise awareness of chapel services and activities available to the community, Verde said.

“Hopefully, this will be the start of a great Easter tradition for years to come,” Verde said.
