Day in and day out, our Soldiers and Families go through the daily struggles of living on an isolated installation, such as Fort Irwin.

Family and MWR is committed to providing exceptional quality life experiences to ensure the community receives services that are truly commensurate with the sacrifices and services our servicemembers and Families give for us. In response to the voice of our customer, the following are some new things you will notice around town.

We’ve received some concerns by community members about needing a secured area where Families with special needs child can enjoy themselves. To make this happen, Family and MWR has opened the south playground area outside of building 1317 (Inner Loop and Normandy, across Samuel Adam’s Grille) for Families with special needs children. Families with special needs children are now able to enjoy a gated, secured play area daily. This has enabled parents to feel assured that their children are able to enjoy the freedom of a large playground while still being in a secured environment. The park is accessible from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday-Friday with no checking in required.

In other play areas, we’ve made secure access easier. Previous access to Kyle Coyote Splash Park was though a single gate; however, to make it easier to access and enjoy the venue, we’ve begun opening all three gates. This allows parents at the pavilion to maintain line of sight with their children as they enter and exit the spray park.

Our Warrior Zone facility continues to be open while undergoing some renovations to enhance the atmosphere and gaming for our Soldiers. Alien Alpha gaming consoles are expected to be installed in time for the holiday season. Alienware Alpha consoles blend a compact for-factor with low thermal and noise signature. Alienware Alpha ensures that power and flexibility expected from PC gaming remains intact. Look for these upcoming improvements as well as an increase in internet computers. Within the next few weeks the upgrade will be complete, including increased internet speeds to enhance your gaming experience!

Family and MWR is super excited about some changes coming to our fitness facilities. Memorial Fitness is soon to become an extended access fitness facility available to Soldiers, dependants 18 years and older, contractors, retirees and civil service personnel stationed here. The purpose of the initiative is to boost morale and provide access to the gym for servicemembers who work unconventional shifts by implementing unmanned hours at the fitness centers, making them accessible after normal business hours. Service and community members will have to register with Memorial, at no cost, and will be provided a key tag to gain access to the facility. Extended access fitness facilities have been implemented on military bases such as Andrews Air Force Base, Fairchild AFB, Scott AFB, and have proven of benefit to their community. Safety and security remains a priority in an unstaffed facility; surveillance systems will provide security and safety to customers using the facility after hours.

In conjunction with becoming an extend access fitness facility, Memorial Fitness will be getting some entertainment upgrades. Memorial will soon have an array of new 70-inch televisions mounted on a 12-foot high, 16-foot wide theatrical truss in the treadmill area. In addition to that, customers will be able to take advantage of some selective listening while getting fit. Using MYE TV audio, customers will soon be able to pick the game, music or show they want to hear while working out by using an Apple or Android app on their personal communication device. They’ll hear audio from whichever screen they choose. This technology is coming from Celebrity, the leading provider of quality entertainment and exclusive provider for MYE Audio.

Family and MWR have a few programs in their infancy at Outdoor Recreation. Our first Desert Discovery trip took place July 26 with more trips to come; call Outdoor Recreation at 380-4327 for more information. Due to the surge of activity during training rotations, Family and MWR will be upgrading the RV campground to add spaces for RVs, full utility hook-ups, rest rooms, showers and a recreation room. This will help with those Soldiers, retirees and contractors on the installation during peak demand periods as rotations are expected to increase and even overlap at some point in the future.

Family and MWR listens to our customers and we are continuously striving to make life on Fort Irwin more enjoyable.
