Department of Labor Five-day Transition Assistance Program: Nov. 16-20, 7:30 a.m.-3:30 p.m. The Transition Assistance Program workshop is required for all separating and retiring military members; spouses are welcome and encouraged to attend.

Overview of the Air Force Aid Society and the Military One Source: Nov. 24, 11 a.m.-noon. The objective of this workshop is to give the participants a “Birds-Eye” view of the support these entities render to our active duty forces.

Pre-Separation Counseling: Nov. 25, 8:30-11 a.m. This is a prerequisite for the five-day Transition Assistance Program. Spouses are highly encouraged to attend.

Military Family Life Consultant: A Military Family Life Consultant is on board at the A&FRC to help military members, spouses, family members, friends and staff members address issues such as relationships, deployment, parenting, stress, grief and many other issues. SBP/Casualty Assistance Office: The SBP and Casualty Assistance Office are now combined. Every retiring member married or single must make a valid election prior to retiring. Retired military survivor assistance is also available. Help is available to file claims through various agencies: DFAS, B.A., SSA and OPM. Spouse Employment/Volunteer Resources: The link to job search strategies and volunteer opportunities is through the Airman & Family Readiness Center. Individual consultation is also available by appointment to provide assistance with resumes and education opportunities. The A&FRC has established a distribution list that will allow job vacancies to be emailed to spouses as they become available. Instructors Needed: Attention all artists and crafters! If you’re creative, we need you! The Arts & Crafts Center is seeking out instructors of all types. Family Child Care

Unlicensed Child Care: Air Force Instruction 34-276, Family Child Care Programs, requires individuals in family housing (military or privatized) who provide child care in their home for more than 10 child care hours per week to be a licensed provider. A child care hour is the number of hours times the number of children in care. If unlicensed does not stop, the Base Commander can revoke your privilege of living in base housing. If you need FCC services ensure the provider is licensed. Each approved home, will have a license hanging in the home and a sign on the outside of the home.

Family Child Care is seeking dedicated people who love working with children: If you live on-base and want to care for children in your home or you are a military dependent and live off-base, you may be eligible to be a licensed or affiliated provider! Make a positive difference in the lives of children! Most materials and training are provided free of charge!

Moms, Pops, & Tots: Meets the second and fourth Thursday of the month. FCC is offering free playgroup sessions for parents and children to share in the development of their child’s early skills, abilities, social interactions, and individuality-all while having fun together and meet new friends. Extended Duty Care: The Air Force offers the Extended Duty Care Program to assist parents who need additional child care beyond their normal arrangements due to mission related requirements. The Benefits of Being a Family Child Care Provider: Being to work out of your home, working while caring for your own children, being in charge of your own business, doing work that you love, setting your own hours and free training! If you are interested in becoming an FCC licensed provider, contact the FCC Office at 661-275-4322. We need providers to offer alternate hours to accommodate evening, swing and weekend duty hours. We are looking for providers to offer care for children with special needs including asthma, allergies, and other physical impairments. We are also looking for providers to offer Extended Duty Care!

High Desert Lanes Bowling Center

King of the Hill Tournament: Nov. 15; registration begins at 10 a.m., bowling for score starts at 11 a.m. Entry fee is $30 per person. This is a handicap event, handicap 80 percent of 230. All bowlers bowl five games across five pair of lanes. If less than 15 bowlers, standings are final after five games. If more than 15 bowlers a ratio of 1:5 advance to a stepladder final based upon qualifying positions. Lanes will not be re-dressed prior to stepladder finals. Prize fund pays out in a 1:5 ratio. Entry is broken down as follows: $10 lineage, $20 prize fund.

Holiday Card Lane: ‘Tis the season to start working on your Holiday Cards! All squadron, sections, private organizations or individuals are encouraged to make a giant Holiday Card to display their holiday wishes to the base community. Participants must register at the Oasis Community Center NLT Nov. 25. Cards may be placed beginning Dec. 1-3. All cards will be judged and winners announced at the Holiday Tree Lighting Ceremony Dec. 4. The top three winners will be notified the morning of the Tree Lighting Ceremony–there must be a representative from each of the top three at the Tree Lighting Ceremony at 5:30 p.m. to accept their prize.

Outdoor Recreation

Gold Panning in Keyesville: Nov. 14, depart ODR at 7 a.m., return at 6 p.m. Register by Nov. 12. Minimum of eight participants, maximum of 12. Cost is $30 and includes transportation, guide and panning equipment. Children under 18 must be accompanied by a parent or adult guardian. Experience the thrill of panning for gold at Keyesville Recreational Mining Area, which is one-half mile wide and encompasses one and one-quarter miles of the Kern River; an excellent place for recreational prospectors to explore and seek gold. You never know what you may find! Alcoholic beverages are not permitted.

Sonic Splash Pool and Muroc Pool: Closed for season

Stables: Did you know that Outdoor Recreation has riding stables where you can board your horse? For $25 a month with a $25 a month membership fee you can board your horse at Outdoor Recreations Riding Stables. Call Outdoor Recreation for more details.

Overnight Camping at Branch Park: Cost is $5 for a campsite for up to four people. Come and get a “wilderness experience” right here on base. This will be primitive camping (no potable water, no telephones, and no RVs).

Private Parties: Rod & Gun, Paintball, and other Outdoor Recreation activities are available for squadron functions and private parties. In addition to using our facilities, let us plan a trip for you! Interested in going somewhere with your squadron or a group of friends? Tell us and we’ll do the legwork for you. Let us know how many people, where you want to go, and what your budget is and we’ll do the rest!

Team Building: Does your office, element or group need some team building? Come talk to us! We have instructors and the facilities to make it a great afternoon/day for you and your staff. Prices vary depending on the activity and group size. Call us today and let’s plan an event!

Lunchtime Disc Golf at Mojave Greens: Wednesdays, noon, Mojave Greens Disc Golf Course, Hole 1. Join us for a round of lunchtime golf. Players of all skill levels are invited to attend. Experienced golfers will be on hand to offer advice and work with beginners. Equipment will be available for loan. Take this opportunity to meet other disc golfers on base and challenge each other on the course!

Equipment Orientation Classes: Tuesday, 10-11 a.m., Wednesday, 4-5 p.m., and Thursday, 7-8 p.m. Not sure how to use equipment or what it does for you? Stop by the front desk and sign up for this one-hour class. We are here to help you get the most out of your fitness routine.

Teen Center

YES (Youth Employment Skills): The YES Program will begin in the 2015-2016 school year and helps teens earn money for college. The program is open to teens whose parent is active duty Air Force. Teens can earn up to a $1,000 towards their post high school education. Contact the Teen Center for more information.

Keystone Club: Every Wednesday, 2:15 p.m., at the Teen Center. The Keystone Club is a leadership club that performs community service projects around the base. The club also helps teens to maintain focus in high school and graduate and prepare for college.

Congressional Award: The Congressional Award is the United States Congress’ award for young Americans. It is non-partisan, voluntary, and non-competitive. The program is open to all 14- to 23-year-olds; young people may register when they turn 13 1/2 years old and must complete their activities before their 24th birthday. Participants earn Bronze, Silver and Gold Congressional Award Certificates and Bronze, Silver and Gold Congressional Award Medals. Each level involves setting goals in four program areas; Volunteer Public Service, Personal Development, Physical Fitness, and Expedition/Exploration. Earning the Award is a fun and interesting way to get more involved in something you already enjoy or something you’d like to try for the first time. You move at your own pace – on your own or with your friends. This is not an award for past accomplishments. Instead, you are honored for achieving your own challenging goals after registering for the program.
Regardless of your situation, you can earn the Congressional Award. The Congressional Award has no minimum grade point average requirements. Teen Council: A Teen Council is being formed to give a voice for teens within the community. The Teen Center is looking for teens associated with other teen youth groups i.e. Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, Chapel Youth Groups, NHS, ASB, Home Schooled, and any other teen youth groups. Representatives will meet once a month and discuss teen issues on base. If interested, contact Anthony Quinnert at Desert High School or Mr. Paul at the Teen Center.

Teen Center Membership: Parents–memberships at the Teen Center are available year round. Cost is $360 for an annual membership. One of the worst times for a teen to make a bad decision is between the hours of 3 pm and 6 p.m. For a dollar a day you can have peace of mind knowing that your son or daughter is in a safe, fun and developmental environment with a caring staff that will make sure your son or daughter feels right at home and have a great experience.

Youth & Teen Sponsorship: Are you new to the area? Will you be PCS’ing soon? Wouldn’t it be nice to have a friend to show your kids around base? The Air Force Youth Centers offer sponsorship for kids & teens so that every move is a seamless transition. Youth of the Year: Do you have what it takes to represent Edwards AFB at the local, district, state, regional and potentially national level? If so you can earn thousands and thousands of scholarship dollars. Check with your local teen center.

Boys & Girls Club Power Hour/Project Learn: Monday-Thursday, 2:45-4 p.m. Power Hour: making minutes count helps club members (ages 6-12) become successful in school by providing homework help/ tutoring while encouraging members to become self-directed learners. Torch Club: Tuesdays, 3:30-4:30 p.m. in the Torch Room. Torch clubs are charter, small-group leadership and service clubs for boys and girls ages 9-12. It is a powerful vehicle through which club staff can help meet the special character development needs of younger adolescents at a critical stage in their development. See Mr. Andrew for details.

Youth & Teen Centers Memberships: For about a dollar a day, you could have peace of mind knowing that your son or daughter is in a safe environment–an environment that fosters development in many different areas and offers constant supervision, tutoring and fun! Did you know that the most dangerous time for youth, especially teens, are between the hours of 3 and 6 p.m.? The Youth and Teen Centers offer social opportunities and structured programming from affiliated agencies such as the Boys & Girls Clubs of America and the 4-H Club.
