The Fort Irwin Defense Commissary Agency awarded a $2,000 educational scholarship to Alex Nguyen as part of the 2015 Scholarships for Military Children program here, July 8.

Nguyen, 18, was selected based on her meritorious achievement in academic studies, citizenship, community activities and leadership. She recently graduated Silver Valley High School and plans to attend the University of California, Los Angeles, using her scholarship towards medical school.

Four thousand applications were submitted for this year’s scholarships. The number of scholarships awarded each year is based on funds available, but the program awards at least $2,000 to each military commissary.
