FORT IRWIN, Calif. — Senior military spouses welcomed new, incoming spouses to Fort Irwin during a newcomer orientation, hosted by the MWR. The event provided a chance for veteran military spouses to give guidance and show what the post and community have to offer.
New spouses to the installation experienced a unique orientation to Fort Irwin during a tour of local amenities, including a bus tour, buffet lunch, and resources brief, along with the opportunity to learn about the community, network and meet new people.
Senior spouses shared their experiences, saying they were once young soldiers’ wives. Another piece of advice was for spouses to get out of their comfort zone and engage with the community.
“Find something that speaks to your heart,” said Kelly Lesperance, spouse of the commanding general of the National Training Center. “Careers are hard— find a passion, volunteer, get out and meet people. Take advantage of what your unit has to offer, join a coffee group— these groups offer great mentorships.”
