FORT IRWIN, Calif. — Fort Irwin celebrated Black History Month at the Sandy Basin Community Center on Feb. 10 under the theme “Success Always Leaves Footprints.”
Paul Courtney, the Mayor of Barstow, Calif., was the guest speaker. He holds the distinction of being the first African American to hold the city’s top elected position.
Courtney was born and raised in Barstow. He attended Montara Elementary, Barstow Middle School, Kennedy High School and Barstow Community College.
“I never assumed that I would be asked to be the key note speaker of this event and being the first black Mayor of Barstow makes it extra special to me,” Courtney said.
Black History Month is an event that the National Training Center and Fort Irwin observes every February through the NTC MEO/EEO offices. This one was presented by the Regimental Support Squadron of the 11th Armored Cavalry Regiment.
The next observance is on March 3 for Women’s History Month. The Garrison Commander, Col. Jeanette Martin is the speaker and the event will be at 11a.m., streamed on Facebook.com/NTCfortirwin.
