World War II veteran visits base

Manuel Martinez, a World War II veteran, interacts with Airmen assigned to the 56th Fighter Wing Oct. 2 during a tour at Luke Air Force Base. Martinez spent the morning reminiscing about his time at the base decades ago and learned how the Air Force runs today.

Manuel Martinez, a World War II veteran, and his family watch fighter jets take off Oct. 2 during a tour at Luke Air Force Base. Martinez saw first-hand how Luke builds the future of airpower.

Martinez brought a photo of his platoon to show to Luke Airmen. He was stationed at Luke in 1941 as a typist and infantryman, and helped out training cadet pilots.

Martinez peers through a car window as he tours Luke AFB. Martinez said his return to Luke AFB is like, “Coming into a new world.”
