NELLIS AIR FORCE BASE, Nev. — “History has taught us over and over again that freedom is not free. When push comes to shove, the ultimate protectors of freedom and liberty are the brave men and women in our armed forces. Throughout our history, they’ve answer the call in bravery and (ultimate) sacrifice,” said Tim Pawlently.
It appears that most people have a superhero character. In the movies super heroes represent justice, self-sacrifice, courage, service before self, excellence and overall making the world a better place.
Memorial Day is about super heroes who paid the ultimate price for freedom for you and me.
Men and women died not for their fame or glory, but to ensure freedom and the pursuit of happiness for future generations. These brave men and women are from different ethnic backgrounds, religious faith groups, social status, and various parts of the world which is a true representation of Avengers…true synergy of hope for tomorrow’s freedom. Their sacrifices echo the pensive reality that freedom is not free.
The salient freedom we so richly enjoy emerges out of blood, sweat and tears. We live in a free society, and enjoy luxuries and liberties that many countries envy because our heroes gave their all so that we may have all.
I believe that all Americans should have a fundamental understanding that we are able to enjoy the things of life because men and women who died which made it possible to enjoy family, sports, education, opportunity to obtain wealth, travel to Disney World…our children need to know the real super heroes!
It is easy to take freedom for granted.
It is said that we really do not enjoy freedom until we have been in slavery. Some people take freedom for granted. In my opinion, when we take freedom for granted, we take our fallen warrior for granted.
John F. Kennedy eloquently stated, “The cost of freedom is always high, but Americans have paid it. And one path we shall never choose, and that is the path of surrender, or submission.”
Memorial Day is about those men and women who swore to “… support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic.” True heroes evolve out of the need of others and country—not of self. Wars and major conflicts march to the drum beat of freedom. In essence, Memorial Day is about justice, courage, self-sacrifice, service before self, excellence, and making the world a better place.
In closing, the next time you watch a movie about superheroes, just know the real heroes paid the ultimate sacrifice for our freedom and pursuit of happiness
I hope Memorial Day is not just another holiday; I hope it is a day of reflection and adoration for our fallen. They died so that we wouldn’t have to … true super heroes.
